JEEP WILLYS MB

Ce 4x4 légendaire est né d'un cahier des charges publié le 11 juillet 1940. Objectif : équipée l'armée d'un véhicule à usage génral pouvant servir au transport de personnel ou de matériel, adaptable pour la reconnaissance et le commandement, à quatre roues motrices et pouvant porter 1/4 de tonne US ". C'est la firme Bantam qui, seule, parvient à relever le défi et soumet un prototype aux essais. Devant le succès du concept, Willys Overland et Ford rejoignent la compétition avec des prototypes pus modèles de présérie de plus en plus adéquats aux souhaits de l'armée. Invoquant le prétexte de l'incapacité de la petite usine Bantam à satisfaire les immenses besoins envisagés, Willys puis Ford écartent Bantam de la production en série. 

This legendary 4x4 is the result of the US Army's rigorous specification requirements booklet published on July 11th 1940. The objective was to equip the Army with a "general purpose vehicle that can be used to transport personnel and equipment, adaptable for reconnaissance and command, with four wheel drive and able to carry 1/4 US ton". The Bantam firm alone was able to meet the challenge and submit a prototype for testing. Given the success of the concept, Willys Overland and Ford join the competition with prototypes and pre-production models even better-suited to the military's needs. Claiming the small size of the Bantam factory would not allow them to satisfy the immense needs in view, Willys and Ford will outrageously eliminate Bantam from mass production plans.
